patent location for all Bollwood horror flicks A rundown old temple whichfor some weird reasonis the seat of all nefarious activities Needless to sayVeerana was centered around oneand surprisingly enough Mohit Suris Raazbegins in one The camera pans the Mandir while an owl hoots eerily somewhere in the distance Boyare we scared The Bathing BeautyNow this is the universal truth for horror flicks across the world its not a horror film without a very scared and a very wet heroine wrapped in a towel No matter how late in the night it isand what time of the year it isthese women are overwhelmed by the desire to dunk themselves in a foaming bathtub Veerana featured two very voluptuous bathing beauties with a predilection for night-time baths Raazdoesnt disappoint A haunted Kangana seeks refuge in a very posh bathroom over and over againeven though the bathtub there has an irritating habit of springing rottingscaly hands on her The Possessed BeautyNot to be mistaken with the bathing beautythis particular species has equally bizarre behavioral disorders She takes midnight walks in skimpy nightdresses and makes strange animal-like noises when confronted with a crossor if she is possessed by a Hindu ghostan om Veerana had a particularly nasty onewho would feed on the blood of unsuspecting victims The one in RaazKanaganathankfullyis an improvement on the category She doesnt need to inflict violence on other people to establish her demonic sideshe does that by tearing herself apart The spooky chowkidarNow this one is the proverbial red herring Usually monkey-capped with a shawl thrown across his shouldersthe chowkidar is used to mislead the audience into believing that he is the man behind all the spooky activities When actually he is the visionary who predicts the gory end of the lead characters Veeranawas true to the chowkidar stereotype with a weird looking fella pottering around the purani haveliRaaz howeverplays around with the stereotype It actually makes a hero out of the chowkidar Sowe have Emran Hashmithe modern day chowkidar who warns Kangana of her horrible fateand what moresaves her from it too And finally the TaikhanaThe story genrally climaxes in a taikhanawhere good triumphs over the evil In Veerana the deadly zombie was sliced to pieces in the aforementioned taikhana with a trishul But in Raaz the taikhana is replaced with a well Nowthe well is not a random substitute Its an informed and an inspired onethanks to countless Japanese ghost flicks which have used the well to the best cinematic effect Raaz too uses the well quite well for his upcoming television show Kaun Banega Crorepati season 9 Related News It is well known that Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan prefers to maintain his silence on any social or political subject unless of course if he has an issue-based film coming up or if the actor is endorsing a government campaign By either maintaining a no comment stand or gesturing at the journalists to not ask such questions the veteran actor comes across as unopinionated in public So when he was asked to share his views on the Supreme Court’s historic order deeming triple talaq “unconstitutional” all the 74-year-old actor could manage to say was that the judgment speaks for itself “We can’t argue with the law” said Amitabh Bachchan The actor spoke at the launch of the ninth season of Kaun Banega Crorepati His reply to the triple talaq order came just after he mentioned how it saddens him to see “women facing regressiveness in the country” The actor even made a mention of his social drama film Pink which sensitively dealt with the issue of consent “On the show I get to know stories about young girls who face resistance at home to study further or work Like there was this girl whose father wanted her to just get married and then she earned Rs 25 lakh on the show and she went back to her father and showed him the cheque So it is inspiring to see such girls I did a film Pink where we showed how girls defy norms imposed on them by the society” remarked Big B Meanwhile rest of the Hindi film industry has been forthcoming about its view on the Supreme Court order Bachchan’s peers like Hema Malini Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal have hailed the order calling it a victory for women’s right to dignity and respect A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Tuesday in a split verdict ruled that the practice of instant triple talaq in the Muslim community is unconstitutional The bench headed by Chief Justice of India J S Khehar set aside the practice by a majority of 3:2 While CJI unfairly favours Indian stent manufacturers Cherian and Kumar think that it is likely to adversely impact indigenous research and innovation Top News In their article ‘Address this blockage’ (IE July 27) KM Cherian and Ajeet Arul Kumar acknowledge that the capping of stent prices has made them affordable but use flawed arguments to suggest that there may be adverse consequences to patients and the indigenous stent industry A major argument against price capping is that the “latest generation” of stents will not be available to the Indian public at these prices This is a disingenuous assertion Successive “generations” of stents in the current era represent small improvements in design which have no documented impact on outcomes that are most important to patients (rates of reblockage heart attacks or death) In fact the best performing stents are currently available in the country at or below the current ceiling price To suggest that “patients hoping to have advanced stents may have to travel abroad” is a misrepresentation The second major area of contention has been the impact of price capping on the indigenous stent industry While others have suggested a uniform cap on prices unfairly favours Indian stent manufacturers Cherian and Kumar think that it is likely to adversely impact indigenous research and innovation The truth is that the uniform price cap has reduced the price differential between the foreign-made and Indian-made stents While the foreign-made stents have been rigorously tested for safety and efficacy in a large number of patients most Indian stents have undergone perfunctory studies to meet the threshold for approval in India Therefore the uniform stent price will in the long run likely disincentivise Indian stent manufacturers from conducting the research required to make them major international players Read Address this blockage here Cherian and Kumar also suggest based solely on their experience that as a result of the reduction in stent prices there is a “disturbing increase” in stenting multiple arteries (which may be inappropriate) This is passing off an anecdote as scientific truth and can only be confirmed or refuted by national level data Second the inappropriate use of stenting has been the elephant in the room for sometime now Overuse and inappropriate use of procedures is more a result of unregulated fee-for-service healthcare delivery and should not be blamed on reduced prices Implementing a uniform price cap is no doubt a blunt policy instrument But this was perhaps the most pragmatic approach available to put an end to widespread price-gouging However continued vigilance is needed to guard against unintended consequences First the benefit of the reduction in price may not be transferred entirely to patients Many hospitals can rejig prices of the other components of their angioplasty “package charges” (the price of the stent is just one component) so that the overall price to the patient does not reduce Second from a profit maximisation perspective it should be expected that stent manufacturers will make the ceiling price their target price Therefore new (not necessarily better) stents may be introduced into the market which are priced at the ceiling even if their actual market price may be lower A more nuanced approach which takes into account safety and efficacy metrics from rigorous studies should inform stent pricing This would make indigenous stents internationally competitive and allow entry to true technological advances Finally the stent pricing debate has had the unintended consequence of overstating the importance of stents in the treatment of coronary artery disease Drugs remain the cornerstone of treatment for stable patients The use of coronary stents in these patients is only for relief of chest pain that is not controlled with medicines Only about one-fifth to one-third of patients require stenting or bypass surgery over a period of five years Stents can be life-saving for patients during a heart attack if implanted in a timely manner Government intervention is often a response to the widespread misuse of physician autonomy If as a profession we could regulate ourselves so that all our patients receive appropriate care there would be no need for external regulation The writer is a professor of cardiology at AIIMS New Delhi Views filed by senior advocate Bhim Singh relating to Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails Top News With India and Pakistan embroiled in a diplomatic row over Kulbhushan Jadhav the Supreme Court today said India has deported several foreign prisoners even in matters where “no reciprocity” has been shown by those nations A bench comprising Justices A K Sikri and Ashok Bhushan while dealing with the issue of release of Pakistani nationals from Indian jails on completion of their prison terms said no other consideration comes into its way for the release of foreign prisoners once they complete their punishment “We do it even when there is no reciprocity from the other country We do it despite what is happening with our people in that country where they are in jail We have read about Mr Jadhav” the bench said without naming Pakistan Jadhav a retired Indian Navy officer was sentenced to death earlier this month by a Pakistani military court on the charge of “espionage” evoking a sharp reaction in India which warned Pakistan of consequences and damage to bilateral ties if the “pre-meditated murder” was carried out The apex court made the remarks while hearing a petition filed by senior advocate Bhim Singh relating to Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails Singh referred to Article 21 (right to life) of the Constitution and argued that even the apex court had directed the Centre to deport those foreign prisoners who have completed their jail term here “We are proud of our Constitution” the bench said Singh who heads a political party Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party also made a mention of a number of such prisoners languishing in jails here The bench asked him to give a list containing details of such prisoners “We do not know whether they are political prisoners or they have committed an offence We do not know about it unless we have the particulars of all these prisoners who have been sentenced for any offence and have undergone the sentence” the bench said Singh however argued that he was fighting for “the rule of law and the world should know about Indian rule of law” Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar told the bench that the matter was pending for a long time and there was a mechanism by which the prisoners who are from other countries and have served their sentences here were sent back to their native nation “How long will this go on The petitioner wants to keep on prolonging it without giving any details” he told the bench which said it would hear the matter on May 3 The court is hearing a petition which has also espoused the cause of Pakistani prisoners arrested for illegally entering India through Jammu and Kashmir The petitioner had earlier told the apex court that 37 prisoners were still languishing in Amritsar jail and they should be repatriated to their country as they have completed their sentence The Centre had earlier told the court that as per its directions Pakistani nationals who are languishing in jails here were being sent back to their country Expressing serious concern over prolonged imprisonment of such prisoners the apex court had directed the Centre to release and repatriate within four weeks 61 Pakistani nationals languishing in jails in India despite having undergone their punishment for various offences It had also asked the government to bring in a suitable mechanism to ensure that such foreign nationals are not forced to remain in jails as courts are being frequently flooded with complaints about Pakistani nationals being incarcerated in jails despite having served their sentence For all
