Syracuse scores season-best 3 goals in win over Army

Alex Lamontagne scored and assisted for SU as it remained unbeaten on the season.The Orange dominated the Black Knights in shots, firing 15 to the Army’s seven and putting eight of those shots on goal to the Black Night’s two.The Orange started hot with a goal from Lamontagne just 48 seconds into the contest. That bested Syracuse’s previous quickest goal of the season by more than 10 minutes.“Getting an early goal was great, but (it) can also be dangerous,” SU head coach Phil Wheddon said through an SU Athletics spokesperson. “Sometimes you relax a bit and I feel like we did that.”Army didn’t back down following the quick start, though, equalizing the score following both of SU’s first half scores.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textArmy goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia needed to make five saves to limit the Orange to its three goals. Syracuse goalkeeper Courtney Bronsan made no saves in the game, allowing both shots the Black Knights put on goal to fall through into the net.Kate Hostage, in her first appearance for Syracuse, provided the first strike in the second half for the Orange, scoring in the 57th minute. That proved to be all SU needed as it held on to win.The Orange assisted on all three of the goals they scored, which is also a season high.With two wins and one tie, the Orange are off to the same start it had in the first three games of 2016, which, just four games into that season, marked its best start the program had had in 13 years. The Orange have collected both of its wins on the road.“Playing at someone else’s stadium is always a challenge,” Wheddon said. “It was about playing our game and not letting them come back.”Syracuse travels to Gainsville, Florida for a Sunday matchup at Florida scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Commentslast_img
