Delano Williams of Grand Turk Bronze Medalist at IAAF

first_img Team Great Britain’s 4x400m relay team disqualified!! Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppProvidenciales, 31 Aug 2015 – Delano Williams is now a bronze medalist as a senior athlete after competing this weekend in the IAAF World Championships in the 4x400m relay on Team Great Britain. Williams, who hails from Grand Turk, helped his team qualify by running a brilliant second leg in the heats, and then doing it again – superbly – in the finals for the medal. The 4x400m which was the last race of the games actually sets up Team GB for a highly anticipated showing in the 2016 Summer Olympics set for Brazil; if the crew remains intact and can repeat this Sunday’s performance, the Turks and Caicos could be looking at Delano becoming the first islander to earn Olympic hardware. Youth and Sports Minister, Deputy Premier Akierra Missick said: “I wish to extend warm congratulations to TCI’s golden boy Delano Williams on that amazing performance at the 2015 IAAF World Championships… You are representing team Great Britain, but have done the Turks and Caicos proud during these games.” The Minister congratulated each team member for a strong showing, and added that: “This is a great day for The Turks and Caicos Islands and we stand proud and salute our son of the soil.” Delano posted this: “Talent wins games but teamwork and intelligence wins championships” It was a pleasure and a whole lot of fun working with these fellows for GB 4x400m.” The team, including Rabah Yousif, Jarryd Dunn and Martyn Rooney ran in a time of 2:58:51 to follow the USA with first and Trinidad and Tobago, who earned second and the silver medal in the event. SAIL Floor Price Set at ₹83 Government Lines Up ONGC CIL and

first_imgThe Narendra Modi government is set to kick off its disinvestment programme on Friday, 5 December, with a 5% stake sale at a floor price of ₹83 in the state-run Steel Authority of India. The auction method, used for this round of disinvestment, will see the government raise around ₹1,700 crore. The stock closed on Thursday at ₹85.25. The steelmaker’s stock has risen just over half to 18%, of the 36% growth experienced by the broader market. The Centre has set for itself a target to raise ₹43,425 crore ($9.5bn) through disinvestment for the current fiscal, a figure that might just turn out to be a bit too high. Resistance from staff unions and investor worries about certain company-specific issues has slowed down the pace. However, the government needs the disinvestment measures to succeed, if it has to meet its budget deficit target of 4.1%.So far, the government has been able to raise about $8.1million, a miniscule part of the projected figure, through stock sale of two state-run institutions limited to the respective employees.SAIL, 80% owned by the state, plans to offload 206.5 million shares through an auction on the stock exchanges on Friday, according to a filing on Wednesday. The Centre is keen to gauge the response of investors through the SAIL auction, after which it plans to sell another 5% stake in ONGC, 10% in Coal India Ltd, 11.36% in NHPC Ltd, as well as list firms including RINL and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd.Retail investors get a 5% discount on the floor price, with 10% of the offered stock reserved for them. HSBC Securities, Deutsche Equities and JP Morgan India are among the six merchant bankers advising the SAIL stake sale.Modi’s plans for 100 smart cities and a possible cut in interest rates in 2015 could help steel firms build up a significant order book, in the face of increased infrastructure building activity.last_img read more

Rohingya new arrivals now 607000 IOM

first_imgThis photograph taken on October 28, 2017 shows Rohingya refugee children watching the Bangladeshi theatre group `Drama Therapy` at Kutupalong refugee camp in Ukhia. AFPSome 607,000 new arrivals are reported as of 28 October, according to IOM Needs and Population Monitoring, UNHCR and other field reports released on Monday.Since the last situation report on 26 October, there have been 2,000 new arrivals, said the reports.According to the IOM, the government has registered 325,660 people using biometric registration as of 28 October while the Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) is constructing access roads towards different camps.Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya on Sunday said the registration of some 365,000 lakh Rohingya people, who have fled Myanmar to avoid persecution, has been completed.Meanwhile, 10 access roads having a total length of 9.25 kms are being constructed and 68 percent work has already been completed.Bangladesh Army started construction of the main connecting road within the new camp, which will be 22 kms long. Five kms have been completed. The Bangladesh government’s Social Services Division has identified and registered 22,484 orphaned children.Thirteen new NGOs were granted FD7 permission this week. The Inter Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) remains available to assist partners with the clearance process through the NGO Coordination Cell.During the last reporting period, many statistics have changed due to better data collection and better data reporting from partners, the report claimed.Violence in Rakhine State which began on August 25 last has driven an estimated 607,000 Rohingya across the border into Cox’s Bazar. The speed and scale of the influx has resulted in a critical humanitarian emergency. The people who have arrived in Bangladesh came with very few possessions. They have used the majority of their savings on transportation and constructing a shelter, often out of no more than bamboo and thin plastic. They are now reliant on humanitarian assistance for food, and other life-saving needs.Basic services that were available prior to the influx are under severe strain due to the massive increase in people in the area.In some of the sites that have spontaneously emerged, there is no access to water and sanitation facilities, raising the risks of an outbreak of disease. The Rohingya population in Cox’s Bazar is highly vulnerable, having fled conflict and experienced severe trauma, and now living in extremely difficult conditions.Population movements within Cox’s Bazar remain highly fluid, with increasing concentration in Ukhia, where the government has allocated 3,000 acres for a new camp.last_img
