With Halloween having arrived, Asthma suffers have been warned over six triggers that are very common at this time of the year.Asthma Society said the 12,408 people with asthma and 17,511 with COPD in Donegal need to be aware of their asthma triggers to avoid a potentially fatal asthma attack.Sarah O’Connor, CEO of the Asthma Society, said: “Halloween is a time to be spooked – in a fun way – and we’re encouraging people to take their asthma triggers seriously so they can stay well through the winter. “We’ve rounded up the most terrifying asthma triggers and found the top tips to help you banish them from your life.“The symptoms of asthma can be extremely frightening for people with asthma. An asthma attack can be fatal – so let’s keep all people with asthma safe and sound this Halloween.”Bonfires and FireworksBoth children and adults who have asthma need to avoid the fumes produced by bonfires and fireworks at Halloween. These fumes can cause difficulty breathing and can be fatal for some people with asthma. The Asthma Society advises anyone with asthma not to attend events with fireworks or bonfires. If you have asthma and you find yourself at an event with bonfires and fireworks, you should:Keep as much distance between you and the bonfire and fireworks fumes as possibleCarry your reliever inhaler (usually blue) with you everywhere you go and use it if necessary over the Halloween periodUse your preventive inhaler as prescribed as this will help strengthen your respiratory systemThis weekend, the weather will be very cold, which is a major asthma trigger – dress in warm clothing and wear a scarf over your mouth to help filter the airEnsure someone with you knows about your asthma and knows how to help you if asthma symptoms occurCarry your asthma attack card with you in case of an emergency.“Dreadful” Dust mites:House dust mites are tiny, spider-like creatures that live in fabrics, carpets and soft furnishing. They’re found in every home, school or office, no matter how clean. House dust mites live in places like your bed, your sofa and your curtains, but because they’re invisible to the naked eye, you won’t be able to see them. What do dust mites eat? You!Dust mites feed off the dead human skin cells which make up about 70% of dust in the home. Some people with asthma may find their symptoms get worse when dusting or vacuuming, this is often because these activities bring settled dust into the air where it can be inhaled. Most people who have asthma symptoms that are triggered by house dust mites are actually reacting to their faeces! While it is impossible to completely get rid of house dust mites, there are plenty of steps you can take to reduce them and limit their impact on your asthma.Damp-dust your house at least once a weekRemove any unwanted clutter in your home to avoid gathering dustWash your sheets, pillow cases, blankets and cuddly toys at 60 degrees or hotter every weekUse allergy-proof covers for mattress, pillows and blanketsVacuum your pillows and mattressWear a dust mask when dustingSome people find air purifiers are helpful in reducing symptoms.“Manky” Moulds:Moulds come in many shapes, colours and sizes. They can be powdery, slimy or even fluffy. Moulds grow best in damp places like bathrooms, kitchens, woody areas and even piles of autumn leaves. Sometimes, moulds may grow in corners or behind furniture, so you might not notice until your home has already been invaded! Keeping your home dry and well-ventilated is the best way to defend against these sneaky trespassers. If moulds are a trigger for your asthma, you may be allergic to the tiny, air-borne spores that moulds use to spread and grow. There are plenty of things you can do to tackle mould in your home.Avoid drying clothes indoors. As they dry more moisture is released into the air in your home, which may allow mould to growWhen showering or cooking, use your extractor fan or open a window to let out the steamMoulds will only grow in moist conditions: Check for any leaks around your pipes or water appliances Use a dehumidifier to reduce the moisture content, if necessaryWear a scarf over your mouth when the weather is wet and windy to avoid breathing in the spores which are carried in the air during thunderstormsDuring autumn, keep away from clusters of fallen leaves which are a perfect breeding ground for mould.“Putrid” Pets:61% of households own a family pet. However, many people are allergic to proteins that are present in the hair, feathers, saliva and the dead skin cells shed by their animals. Although pets are a part of the family, they can present a huge problem for some people with asthma. Animals such as cats, dogs and horses are among the worst culprits, but even animals like snakes and birds can trigger asthma symptoms for some people. If your pet is a trigger for your asthma, it should be re-homed if possible. If this is not possible it can be difficult to limit the impact on your asthma, but there are steps you can take. Keep pets away from living areas and the bedroom, especially from fabric-covered furniture, rugs and carpetsKeep your pet outside as much as possibleEnsure your pet is properly washed by someone elseVacuum regularly using a vacuum suitable for pet hairIf your pet is in a cage, make sure the cage is properly cleaned as often as possible“Sickening” Smoke:Everyone knows that smoke is extremely bad for us, but between bonfires, fireworks and open fires, it can be hard to escape at this time of year. There over 7,000 chemicals in tobacco smoke alone and cigarettes release more than a billion harmful “free radicals” per puff. This isn’t good for anyone, but particularly for people with asthma. When someone with asthma inhales tobacco smoke either from smoking or from second hand fumes, irritating substances settle in the moist lining of the airways within the lungs. This causes inflammation in the lungs, which can bring on asthma symptoms and even cause an asthma attack. If you have asthma:It’s important to avoid smoking completelyDo not allow others to smoke in your homeKeep your distance from others smoking in publicKeep your reliever inhaler with you at all times, especially if you’re going to a bonfire or fires works display and ensure the people around you are aware of your condition. For more information or advice on potential triggers within your home, you can call the Asthma Society’s free Asthma and COPD Adviceline on 1800 44 54 64.Asthma sufferers warned about Halloween triggers was last modified: October 31st, 2019 by Shaun KeenanShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)
10 June 2015West Coast One has reached commercial operation. The 94 megawatt (MW) wind project located 130km north of Cape Town is owned by Engie, together with partners Investec and Kagiso Tiso Holdings. The consortium was selected as preferred bidder for this project in May 2012 and signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Eskom, the electricity parastatal, in May 2013. Construction of the wind farm, which consists of 47 turbines of 2MW turbines, started in mid-2013.Gerard Mestrallet, the chairman and chief executive of Engie, said: “South Africa is an important market for Engie and we are a committed long-term investor in the African continent.“The West Coast One wind farm supports South Africa’s objective of increasing renewable generation and promoting local economic development. This project demonstrates Engie’s ability to deliver important renewable projects and underlines our commitment to developing sustainable sources of energy.”Investment in the wind farm was €160-million (R2.2-billion), funded by a mix of equity and debt, which has been provided by local banks. West Coast One will offset an estimated 5.6 million tons of carbon dioxide over the 20-year duration of its PPA.This project follows the start of operation of the 300MW Tarfaya wind farm in Morocco in 2014, Africa’s largest wind power project. It is owned by Engie in partnership with Nareva Holding.South Africa is implementing a 20-year plan that makes provision for 42% – 17gigawatts (GW) – of new generation to come from renewable energy, with 8GW allocated to onshore wind. The successful Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) is in place, with a number of projects already closed. In addition to West Coast One, Engie is actively developing further projects in South Africa. In 2013, the group signed PPAs for two greenfield open-cycle gas turbine power plants of 335MW (Dedisa) and 670MW (Avon), which are located in Eastern Cape and in KwaZulu-Natal, respectively. This year, an Engie-led consortium with South African partners, was nominated as preferred bidder for the 100MW Kathu Solar Park in Northern Cape.Engie currently has 19GW of renewable generation capacity in operation worldwide, of which more than 4GW is wind. It holds a 43% equity interest in West Coast One, while Investec owns 34.5% and Kagiso Tiso Holdings has a 20% interest. The remaining 2.5% will be allocated to a community trust, with the purpose of developing and sustaining the surrounding community.Engie, which is based in Paris, develops its businesses (power, natural gas, energy services) around a model based on responsible growth to take on the major challenges of energy’s transition to a low-carbon economy. It has expertise in four key sectors: renewable energy, energy efficiency, liquefied natural gas and digital technology.Source: Engie
