Danushka Gunathilaka banned for six matches by Sri Lanka Cricket

first_imgSri Lanka Cricket (SLC) on Friday handed a six-match suspension to all-rounder Danushka Gunathilaka for breaching its code of conduct regulations.SLC had launched an inquiry into alleged misconduct by the 27-year-old and had suspended him from all forms of international cricket at the conclusion of the second Test against South Africa.Gunathilaka is currently being investigated after his friend was accused of raping a Norwegian woman in the cricketer’s hotel room on Saturday. Gunathilaka was on Wednesday questioned by the police in rape case. The police, however, said the evidence do not point to the opening batsman’s personal involvement in the case in which one of his friends has been arrested.Gunathilaka was not aware of what took place between the Norwegian woman who had complained of rape on Saturday night after which his friend, Sandeep Jude Selliah, 26, was arrested, they said.He had booked two rooms at the hotel on the night of the incident and had violated Sri Lanka Cricket’s code of conduct of players by staying out longer hours, the police said.Gunathilaka was later suspended by Sri Lanka Cricket for his disciplinary breach and therefore will not figure in the 5-match ODI series against South Africa starting Saturday.SLC rules do not allow cricketers to bring in guests into their hotel rooms and also stipulate that during matches players must be back in their rooms by midnight.Gunathilaka was banned for three matches by SLC last October for misconduct during the home series against India and was also handed a suspended sentence of an additional three matches over a one-year period.advertisement”Out of the total six matches, three matches have been handed over for the latest violation of the ‘Player Code of Conduct and Contractual Obligation’ he has entered to with Sri Lanka Cricket,” the board said in a statement.”Whilst another 3 matches are given from a suspended sentence of one year, which Gunathilaka was already serving since 18th October, 2017, for breaching the ‘Player Contract,’ in an earlier occasion.”Gunathilaka, who has played five Tests, 33 one-day internationals and 15 Twenty20 matches, will also lose his match fee for the second Test against South Africa along with any bonus or other related payments.(With inputs from Reuters)last_img read more
