West Point Wins Guinness Beach Soccer Tourney

first_imgPower Plant of West Point yesterday defeated Ambassadors of Mamba Point 6-4 in the finals of the second edition of LFA organized Guinness Beach Soccer Tournament. The second edition of the two-day tournament was held on Florida beach in New Kru Town.Earlier in the third place match, New Kru Town’s Florida Beach Soccer team defeated PHP Beach Soccer team, the defending champions, 4-3.The opening day’s encounter last Saturday saw Power Plant of West Point beating New Kru Town’s Florida 5-1. The losers, according to Coach Togba Sawyer were new to the rules and therefore committed unnecessary mistakes.“Our boys were unsure of the rules or rather they did not understand the rules very much,” Sawyer told the Daily Observer, “so we lost the game.”The second game on Saturday saw Ambassadors whipping PHP 7-2, in a one-sided encounter.“We came with a new team to give them a chance to enjoy the game,” a member of PHP’s team told the Daily Observer. In the first edition, PHP Beach Soccer team played with a team that secured the goals whenever they needed them.“How could a coach change a winning team?” was the question many who witnessed the impressive performance of PHP in the first edition, held on Serie A sports pitch in the Township of West Point, were asking.Mr. Musa Shannon, vice president for administration at the Liberia Football Association responsible for beach soccer, told journalists that the tournament is to bring the game to the community.“We took the game to West Point and the people welcomed it and now we held the second edition in New Kru Town and the people have welcomed it as well,” Shannon said.He said it is the intent of the LFA to ensure that the game is held in communities with beaches at their disposal, noting that place like his home county, Grand Cape Mount, could see beach soccer games, soon.He commended the communities that welcomed the event, as well as those who helped made the tournaments successful.Shannon said the tournament is geared toward a regional competition to be held later in Nigeria, under the Confederation of African Football (CAF).Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
