Towering Guyana off-spinner Steven Jacobs has taken two for 13. A Judge has asked the public to remember the suffering of the emergency service personnel who attended the scene of Ireland’s worst ever road smash in Co Donegal.Judge John O’HaganJudge John O’Hagan this week jailed Shaun Kelly for two years after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the deaths of eight people in Inishowen in 2010.But Circuit Court Judge O’Hagan took time out of his sentence to pay tribute to those who attended the scene at Glasmullen outside Carndonagh on July 10th, 2011. Judge O’Hagan said the carnage met by Gardai, fire service and medical personnel must have ben horrific.“The thought of the emergency services arriving and having to clean it up. Some probably needed counseling after it. It was a horrific event.“There were 10 or 12 firemen at the scene. There were five Gardai, ambulance personnel, a priest, a doctor and a Gardai Inspector – the number of people affected by an accident like this. This was indeed a shocking situation,” he said.Letterkenny Circuit Court heard how those personnel tried in vain to save the lives of those hurt in the crash. Medics tried to perform CPR on 66 year old pensioner Hugh Friel at the scene.However, Mr Friel, who was returning for playing bingo, died a short time later.The seven passengers in the car being driven by Kelly, now 26, were killed instantly.The fire service cut Kelly from the vehicle and he was rushed to Letterkenny General Hospital suffering form multiple injuries including brain damage.Judge O’Hagan said he had consider all options when sentencing Kelly including community service and also a suspended sentence. A book on skin just was published – no, not one of those books, but a book on the physiology of human skin. Nina Jablonski wrote Skin: A Natural History (UC Berkeley, 2006) and Qais Al-Awqati (Columbia U) reviewed it in Science.1 The reviewer noticed that “In its discussion of the human skin, the book’s principal theme is evolution, and almost every page contains that word.” So, how did Jablonski do? Did she satisfy the reviewer’s hopes that Darwin can explain the naked ape?Although the author wants to provide an evolutionary perspective on all attributes of skin biology, the accounts she provides seldom rise above the provision of plausible hypotheses. Is it really true that we were selected to be hairless sweaty creatures? That sounds possible, but what is the actual evidence for such an assertion? Is it also true that vitamin D synthesis, a major locus of interaction between sunlight and diet, is the dominant factor in the natural selection of skin color? This idea is simply presented without any of the documentation that would make a convincing story. One would like to see the evidence of how rickets (vitamin D deficiency) might act as an agent of evolutionary selection.Even in the areas of sociology, “The thorny issue of the social construction of the roles of skin color is reduced again to a brief survey of skin color biology and its evolutionary implications.” At the end of the review, Al-Awqati tried to find a few things to praise, but the shallowness of Jablonski’s evolutionary theorizing extended to her own research. “Although only a few of Jablonski’s research papers address skin evolution,” he said, “the lack of deep expertise need not prevent a nonspecialist from pulling together findings from different fields to generate an exciting, even fresh view of nature.” Apparently this book “fell short” of this mark also.1Qais Al-Awqati, “Anthropology: Showing Some Skin,” Science, 2 March 2007: Vol. 315. no. 5816, p. 1223, DOI: 10.1126/science.1138921.If even a fellow evolutionist comes looking for evidence for evolutionary myths and can’t find it, why should anyone else pay attention? It’s not just the sociology of skin that is Darwin’s thorn in the flesh. Heat regulation in furry apes is much different than the sweating response in human skin. Sweat glands are complex structures under the control of the nervous system. The skin is not just a surface; it has multiple layers with veins, arteries, glands, nerves, hair muscles, sebaceous glands, pores and specialized receptors for touch, heat and pain. Werner Gitt in The Wonder of Man says that one square centimeter of skin contains 6 million cells, 100 sweat glands, 15 sebaceous glands, 5,000 sensory corpuscles, 200 pain points, 25 pressure points, 12 cold-sensitive points and 2 heat-sensitive points. Skin sloughs off dead cells while regenerating new ones in a precise balance. It is an important barrier to disease germs, and a protection from injury and dehydration. It performs a respiratory function, absorbing some of the oxygen we use, while letting some carbon dioxide in and out. Human skin is an incomparable substance. Burn victims are not given artificial plastics; they are given skin transplants from live humans. How does evolution explain the fact that a newborn infant arrives into the world with a vernix coating to protect its skin? What evolutionary process led to the precise timing of a multitude of changes that occur in the right sequence when a baby is born? These are all matters of life and death; without them, there would be no human race. These observational facts demand causes equal to them. Creationists have no problem with the question. Jablonski wrote a whole book on the theme of skin evolution, mentioning the E word on practically every page. The reviewer was itching for evidence, but only received rash excuses. by Dr Jerry BergmanUnder the headline The Y chromosome is disappearing – so what will happen to men?, two genetics professors, Dr. Griffin and Dr. Ellis write, “The Y chromosome may be a symbol of masculinity, but it is becoming increasingly clear that it is anything but strong and enduring.” One wonders what evidence they have for making this prediction. Actually, none. Then where do they get this idea?As most adults know, in most mammals two X chromosomes produce a female, and an X and Y produce a male. Thus, it is the presence of the Y chromosome that determines a male. Although the Y chromosome influences over 200 different traits, one area of this chromosome, specifically where the SRY genes are located, triggers the major traits that produce males. If the SRY genes transpose from the Y chromosome to the X chromosome, an XX female will develop into to a male. This condition is very rare, but it does happen occasionally.Without the Y chromosome there would be no males, and thus no reproduction, so why do some scientists conclude it is disappearing? The reason is the X and Y chromosomes are thought to have evolved from a pair of identical autosome chromosomes that diverged from 100s of millions ago. 300 million years ago is another estimate, and a newer estimate puts the number at closer to 166 million years ago. Given such wide guesstimates, it is obvious that no one has any idea when they diverged, assuming they did.Even the divergence theory itself is not based on evidence, but on assumptions that in turn are based on Darwinian assumptions. The theory goes like this: over eons of time, genes that were beneficial for males either evolved by the accumulation of mutations on their Y chromosome, or were acquired through translocation (the movement of genes from other chromosomes to the Y chromosome).X and Y. Credit: Science Photo LibraryThe question of how mammals reproduced before this is answered by looking at all life forms and realizing the most primitive, such as bacteria, reproduce asexually by cloning, and other, more advanced life forms, reproduce sexually. The relatively puny human Y now contains only 78 genes and the human X has a whopping 1,098 known genes. This means human females have over 1,000 more genes than males.Because the Y chromosome is a small fraction of the X, from the primate genome which it is believed to have evolved, it is assumed the human Y chromosome has lost 1,393 of its 1,438 original genes over the course of its existence. Linear extrapolation of this 1,393-gene loss over 300 million years produces a genetic loss rate of 4.6 genes per million years. Extrapolating this forward means, Professors Griffin and Ellis claim, in 4.6 million years the Y chromosome would lose all of its functions.It is the creationists that predict degeneration of the genome from Adam’s perfect mutation free genome to our modern human. Humans suffer from over 5,000 diseases caused by the accumulation of mutations in our gamete genome. Furthermore, the human Y chromosome is exposed to high mutation rates due to the fact that it is passed on exclusively through comparatively unprotected sperm, which undergo multiple cell divisions during gametogenesis. Each cell division increases the risk of mutations, and the more cell divisions, the more mutations that result. Additionally, sperm are stored in a highly oxidative (thus mutation prone) environment compared to the cells inside the body that are protected by several mechanisms. These two conditions put the Y chromosome at a greater mutation risk than the rest of the genome. All this supports the creation view, not the Darwinian view which teaches that evolution improves the species and evolves it to more advanced levels of evolution.Because the current estimate is that a 30 percent difference exists between humans and chimps, it is assumed that the Y chromosome was, and thus is, one of the fastest-evolving parts of the human genome. In the terminal stages of the Y chromosome degeneration, the story goes, other chromosomes will take over its genes and thus its functions. Thus, evolution will take us all the way back to the pre-Y chromosome stage of development that existed 100s of millions, 300 million or 160 million years ago! In the end, the Y chromosome they predict will disappear entirely, and a new sex-determining system will arise like the one that existed 100s of millions, 300 million or 160 million years ago. As is obvious, this is rampant speculation based on the varieties of reproduction existing in some animals.On the other side, comparisons of human and chimpanzee Y chromosomes indicate that the human Y chromosome has not lost any genes since the hypothetical human and chimpanzee divergence, estimated between 6 and 7 million years ago. One 2012 report claimed that only one gene had been lost since humans diverged from the rhesus macaque 25 million years ago.These facts provide direct evidence that the linear extrapolation model is seriously flawed, and the human Y chromosome is either no longer shrinking, or shrinking at a much slower rate than the 4.6 genes per million years estimated by the linear extrapolation model. In short, this topic, as is true of much of Darwin theory, involves massive speculation and illustrates the need to examine the data used to determine some conclusions in evolutionary tales. The A380 superjumbo is not dead, it’s just resting.That was the message from Airbus and one of its major customers in Toulouse on Friday as speculation continues about the superjumbo’s future.Airbus announced earlier this year that it will more than halve production of the superjumbo from the current 2.5 per month to one a month because of lacklustre demand.But Airbus chief executive Tom Enders, speaking at an event to celebrate the manufacturer’s 10,000th aircraft delivery, predicted there would still be a demand for the A380 into the future.Read: The world needs more A380s“We’ve pulled down the rates for some time but we are very confident we will produce an aircraft for many years to come,’’ he said.Enders said Airbus was continuously making small improvements to the A380.“And we’ve said many times that bigger improvements such as the famous re-engining is not so much a question of if, but of when,’’ he said.The manufacturer’s head salesman, John Leahy, said the A380 continued to generate passenger interest around the world.“People go out of their way to fly on the A380,’’ he said, adding that 10 per cent of passengers using London Heathrow Airport this year would be getting on or off one of the superjumbos.Singapore Airlines chief executive Goh Choon Phong said he continued to see a role for the double-decker aircraft his airline helped launch flying on high demand, high density routes where there were slot constraints.“So we will continue to see demand for such aircraft types,’’ he said.The Singaporean carrier is acquiring five new A380s but created waves for Airbus when it decided not to renew the 10-year lease on its first Airbus A380. The announcement came as Malaysia Airlines revealed it was in discussions with airlines in the region about offloading its fleet of six A380s.SIA may also not renew four more leases due to end, although Goh reiterated that a decision on that had yet to be made.The Singaporean carrier has also said it will launch new cabin products with the arrival in the second half of next year of the first new A380.Goh said the new products, developed over “the last few years’, would wow customers and would ensure that the airline retained an industry-leading position on products.

Efficient nitrogen management is critical for earning a profit in present economic conditions, said Ray Massey, Extension professor of agricultural and applied economics at the University of Missouri, a partner in the initiative known as U2U.“Studies indicate that Split N applications to corn can improve profitability as well as increase risk,” Massey said. “The Corn Split N tool helps farmers understand and manage the risk of Split N applications.”Corn Split N integrates historical data on weather and fieldwork conditions with economic considerations to determine the feasibility and profitability of completing a post-planting nitrogen application for corn production.“U2U has combined corn yield response data from Extension crop fertility specialists together with statistical modeling of days suitable for fieldwork to expand the Split N tool to cover seven new states,” said Ben Gramig, associate professor of agricultural and resource economics at Purdue.Farmers in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio and Michigan can get customized results based on their planting and fertilization schedule, local costs and available equipment.The tool also has a summarized fieldwork table and crop calendar so farmers can see how schedule adjustments might affect their ability to fertilize on time. Accumulations of growing degree days, or GDDs, and associated corn growth beyond the current day are estimates based on the historical 30-year average GDD accumulation for a user-selected location.Corn Split N is part of the U2U suite of online tools that help farmers and agricultural advisers manage increasingly variable weather and climate conditions across the Corn Belt. A panel of 221 members has been selected for the existing and upcoming Foreigners’ Tribunals (FTs) in Assam. Another 50 applicants have been put on the wait list.In a notification on Monday, the Gauhati High Court said the panel members comprised retired judicial officers, advocates and civil servants, who we were called for interviews from July 16 to August 11. It recommended the candidates, selected in order of merit,. The list had been prepared and published less than a fortnight before the completion of the final National Register of Citizens (NRC) on August 31.200 new tribunalsEach FT is headed by a judge-like member appointed under the FT Act, 1941, and FT Order, 1984, as per the guidelines issued by the government from time to time.Assam has 100 FTs. According to Home Department, there were initially 11 Illegal Migrant Determination Tribunals (IMDT). These were converted to FTs after the Supreme Court scrapped the Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunals) Act, 1983.The government established another 21 FTs in 1983. Four more were added in 2009 and the remaining 64 established in 2014 for disposal of cases that were piling up in the FTs.The government would establish 200 FTs primarily for handling cases of people to be excluded from the final NRC. These would be in addition to the existing 100 and are part of the 1,000 that the Centre had decided to help Assam set up in view of the pressure envisaged to dispose of cases of people to be left out of the NRC.Officials in the Home and Political Department said the new FTs would be distributed among six districts. Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, which covers Guwahati and outskirts, would get 67 of these, followed by Nagaon with 39, Jorhat 31, Bongaigaon 22, Sonitpur 21, and Cachar 20.“Apart from the cases of people left out of the NRC, the new FTs will also deal with the regular cases of D-voters,” a senior officer said. ‘D’ stands for doubtful or dubious voter, a category of people disenfranchised by the government for their alleged lack of proper citizenship documents.
