first_imgJohn Calipari's daughter takes secret picture of his at All-Star Game.Kentucky head coach John Calipari, of course, is on-hand at the NBA All-Star Game tonight to cheer on a few of his former players. But it looks like he’s also brought his daughter Erin along for the experience. She seems to be having a grand old time too, for other reasons than just the game.Calipari, who is clearly a bit bored, claims that she’s been photobombing her father all day. The irony? She’s worried about embarrassing him.W/ @UKCoachCalipari standing far enough away that I don’t have to talk to anyone but close enough that he can’t forget I’m here and leave me— Dr.SicilianoCalipari (@TheErinCalipari) February 15, 2015Every once in awhile he’ll introduce me to someone and then wait to see what I say. Blockchain Project in Container Shipping Fails

first_imgzoomIllustration. Source: Pixabay under CC0 Creative Commons license Hong Kong-based 300cubits, one of the pioneers in the application of blockchain solutions to the container shipping market, has decided to suspend the operation of its Booking Deposit Module effective October 1, 2019.As explained, the lack of clarity in regulatory regimes surrounding digital currencies has proved to be the greatest hurdle in the 300cubits’ marketing efforts. What is more, the lack of liquidity for the TEU tokens and the volatility of all cryptocurrencies in general also cast a constant doubt among the users on whether the value of the tokens could be realized. The cloud-based system built on blockchain started accepting trial shipments in March 2018 and was launched into live production in July 2018.The system has had participation from the largest shipping companies such as Sealand of Maersk Group, CMA CGM, MSC and COSCO while the 300cubits has gone the length in its discussions with the rest of the top ten container liners about running trial shipments on the system. Additionally, more than a dozen shippers have tried the system and over 100 registered to get their allocation of TEU tokens, according to 300cubits.When using the system, both carriers and shippers were careful about their commitment. Nearly all except one shipment where booking deposits were placed were executed according to the booking. However, only a couple hundred containers have gone through the system, which is not sufficient to keep the system going commercially, 300cubits said.Specifically, many potential users shied away from trying as they were not sure about what regulatory measures the authorities may take in respect to digital currencies. Apart from this, 300cubits has also learned that shippers face bigger booking pain point than rolling, which is what the system is designed to solve. Instead, these shippers complain that they often could not get their bookings confirmed during peak season despite their booking volume are still within contract commitment. The company further explained that, from its experience, many of the core blockchain features such as immutability and anonymity are either not intuitive or unappealing to the business users. With the system being suspended, 300cubits will burn at least 75% of the TEU tokens that have not been sold or picked up by the industry users. Going forward, 300cubits will burn even more TEU tokens as the ones currently being allocated to industry users circulate back to 300cubits.Moving forward, the company said it would continue with its other projects. It plans to promote the use of blockchain in the areas of transportation and explore the use of other technologies in areas such as shipping and finance.last_img read more

RBC and WestJet partner on new loyalty platform in bid to take

first_imgTORONTO – WestJet Airlines Ltd. is teaming up with the Royal Bank of Canada to create a new loyalty program that aims to attract a “very substantial” group of “very unhappy” customers from the Aeroplan program, which its rival Air Canada is preparing to replace in 2020.WestJet and RBC said Wednesday that they will launch the Ampli loyalty platform with offers and rewards for customers by the end of the year. The venture is an opportunity for the airline to take advantage of uncertainty about Air Canada’s decision to ditch the Aimia-backed Aeroplan loyalty program, said WestJet chief executive Ed Sims. When the decision was announced last year, it upset some customers who had collected points under the program for years and questioned how Air Canada’s new program would work.“There are people who know what is happening and don’t care and will stick with that scheme. There are those who know what is happening, but think it’s two years away and aren’t going to do anything about it and the third camp are very unhappy about the uncertainty that that situation is creating and are actively looking at other schemes and alternatives,” said Sims. “It is that third group that we believe are going to be highly attracted to our new proposition.”In marketing to that group, Sims said WestJet will highlight that the airline does not overbook flights or have blackouts when loyalty points can’t be redeemed. He also said the RBC partnership will help remind consumers about the airline more often, since most people use banking services more often than they fly.The Ampli loyalty program will operate through a mobile app that gives guests instant access to updates about their balance, and also offers WestJet and RBC quick insight into user habits. The platform will build on RBC and WestJet’s existing relationship, which includes a WestJet branded RBC MasterCard. In recent years, RBC has increased its focus on partnerships, signing deals with Indigo, Tire Butler, Shopify and others. On Wednesday at its Investor Day event in Toronto, the bank further indicated its interest in using creative ways to lure customers, when it revealed it had formed a division for such offerings called RBC Ventures.Companies in this story: (TSX:RY, TSX:WJA, TSX:AIM, TSX:AC)last_img read more

The Latest May to speak to UK lawmakers Brexit vote looms

first_imgBRUSSELS — The Latest on the debate over Britain’s impending departure from the European Union (all times local):12:20 p.m.British Prime Minister Theresa May will make an emergency statement to Parliament about Brexit, amid reports that a crucial vote on her EU divorce deal will be postponed. The House of Commons Speaker’s office says May will make the previously unscheduled statement at about 3:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. EST).The announcement came as May held talks with her Cabinet about the next steps in the Brexit process. The House of Commons is due to vote Tuesday on whether to accept or reject the Brexit deal, and signs point to a big defeat for the prime minister.May’s office said the vote was definitely going ahead, but the BBC and other outlets reported it would be delayed.___9 a.m.The European Union’s top court has ruled that Britain can change its mind over Brexit, boosting the hopes of people who want to stay in the EU that the process can be reversed. The European Court of Justice ruled Monday that when an EU member country has notified its intent to leave, “that member state is free to revoke unilaterally that notification.”Britain voted in 2016 to leave the 28-nation bloc, and invoked Article 50 of the EU’s Lisbon Treaty in March 2017, triggering a two-year exit process.Article 50 contains few details, in part because the idea of any country leaving was considered unlikely. The Luxembourg-based ECJ said that given the absence of any exit provision in Article 50, countries are able to change their mind in line with their own constitutional arrangements and that such a move “reflects a sovereign decision.”The British government is free to do so as long as no withdrawal agreement has entered force.___Lawless reported from London. The Associated Presslast_img read more

Mens Lacrosse drops ECAC conference opener to Loyola 129

Losing its fourth consecutive game, the No. 17 Ohio State men’s lacrosse team was unable to outscore the Loyola Greyhounds in the ECAC conference opener on Saturday. The Buckeyes had just come off a tough three-game road schedule, losing narrowly to No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 6 Virginia and unranked Albany. The Buckeyes struggled greatly with time of possession, as crucial turnovers and a nearly 2-to-1 ground ball advantage for the Greyhounds hindered OSU. “We’re not playing a championship brand of lacrosse right now,” OSU coach Nick Myers said after the game. “Credit Loyola — they’re a good team, but we didn’t play anywhere close to 60 minutes of Buckeye lacrosse today.” The Buckeyes were 8-for-25 in faceoffs, which also contributed to the their scant possessions. “Loyola is a team that is going to possess the ball,” Myers said. “When you don’t have the ball, your defense plays more than they want to, and ultimately that’s when breakdowns occur.” Leading the charge for the Greyhounds was senior midfielder Chris Palmer, who scored five goals. Fellow senior attackman Matt Langan also registered a hat trick. The Greyhounds set the tone early with a three-goal flurry in the first 12 minutes of the game. OSU rallied back in the second period to tie the game, 3-3, with Dominique Alexander scoring first. Alexander led the Buckeyes in scoring with two goals. Palmer was able to notch a goal near the end of the half to put the Greyhounds up, 4-3, at the break. The Greyhounds began strong in the third period with two goals. OSU freshman midfielder Michael Italiano responded quickly with a goal, but senior midfielder Mike Pires drew a two-minute nonreleasable penalty shortly after, which proved particularly damaging. The Greyhounds scored two quick goals while the Buckeyes were shorthanded, pushing Loyola up, 9-4. The Buckeyes were able to claw their way back into the game, bringing the score to 10-9 at the four-minute mark, but were unable to secure the win as the Greyhounds scored two final goals to put away the game. The Greyhounds star attackman Mike Sawyer was limited to one goal. Loyola managed to shut down the Buckeyes’ leading scorer, sophomore attackman Logan Schuss, who failed to score a goal for the first time in his entire collegiate career of 23 games. The loss starts the Buckeyes off at 0-1 in the early ECAC conference play, and brings them to an even 5-5 on the season. With the tough four-loss stretch, Myers said, his team simply will look to the future. “We have to keep working. We can’t focus on what’s been,” Myers said. “Right now we have the whole season in front of us, and this conference is wide open.” The Buckeyes will face Hobart at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. read more

Croatia gives England oxygen after beating Spain

first_imgOverly complicated match for the Spanish National Team in Zagreb, where they lost 3-2 with a last-minute winner and gave England one last breath. The UEFA Europa League A’s Group 4 where we have England, Croatia, and Spain, went through a major plot twist this Thursday after the World Cup runners-up defeated the Spaniards dramatically.Luis Enrique’s squad now has two consecutive defeats after today, one that leaves them in an incredibly difficult situation for next Sunday and completely out of their hands.A win in Zagreb today against Croatia, would’ve given them the direct ticket to the League A’s final four but Dalic’s side had the support from their fans and never surrendered. Most of the action went down during the second half, all the goals were even scored during the final half hour of the game and it was a real nail-biter because the Spaniards refused to falter until the very last minute when the locals were able to get that result they wanted so badly.Almost at the same time, the England National Team had one eye on their friendly match against the United States, and another one on this match as they were rooting for Croatia’s victory in order to stay alive in the competition.🇭🇷🇪🇸What a match. What a win. Congratulations!#BeProud #NationsLeague #CROESP #Vatreni🔥 pic.twitter.com/5DNROKzSTK— HNS | CFF (@HNS_CFF) November 15, 2018After a two-year ban that their supporters had to endure due to their hooligan problem, Croatia was finally able to play a very different match as they were coming back to their people for the first time after reaching the World Cup final last summer.Having the support from everybody in the stadium meant the world to them, it motivated them and kept them as the dominant side throughout the whole 90 minutes of the match.Despite not having scored during the first half, Croatia created many interesting chances that De Gea saved for the most part with a Spanish defense that was against the ropes. Finally, after ten minutes into the second half, Perisic recovered a ball in a very dangerous zone for Spain and he saw Kramaric in a very advantageous position to hurt the Spaniards. The forward didn’t fail when he sent his strike, Croatia was ahead in the scoreline but the match was just getting started. We were in for quite an incredible game, with everybody on the edge of their seat and hoping for more goals.📺 RESUMEN | Echa un vistazo a las mejores jugadas del partido ante los croatas en Zagreb. 🇭🇷 #CRO 3-2 🇪🇸 #ESP👉🏻 https://t.co/Vnnstq9a5N#UnaNuevaIlusión pic.twitter.com/nfTuUCYKFRJadon Sancho, Borussia DortmundCrouch: Liverpool could beat Man United to Jadon Sancho Andrew Smyth – September 14, 2019 Peter Crouch wouldn’t be surprised to see Jadon Sancho end up at Liverpool one day instead of his long-term pursuers Manchester United.— Selección Española de Fútbol (@SeFutbol) November 15, 2018It took Spain only two minutes to react, they got the equalizer through Dani Ceballos after Isco assisted him with a cross from the left flank. Game on!After another two clear missed chances from Rakitic and Rebic, Luka Modric was able to find Jedvaj’s head before the 70th minute of the match and gave Croatia the lead one more time.Eight minutes later, Vrisaljko wasn’t able to prevent the ball hitting his arm inside the box and the referee decided to call a penalty.Sergio Ramos stood up on the spot again, but he didn’t do a Panenka this time and scored with a potent low shot that the goalkeeper wasn’t able to save. The Spaniards were able to maintain the draw, which left them in a better position than they were with a loss, but the match wasn’t over yet.The hero of the night was Jedvaj again, who was right on the spot as David de Gea deflected a strong shot from Brekalo and gave Croatia the chance to win the match with a final 3-2 result. This win leaves everything for the last match between the Croatian side and England next Sunday. Whoever wins takes all, and only a draw would give Spain the ticket to the final four. What a great competition this has turned out to be.✅ That feeling when you score your first two international goals to defeat @SeFutbol deep into added time. 🇭🇷🇪🇸⚽️⚽️ Well done, Tin Jedvaj! 👏#BeProud #Croatia #Family #Vatreni🔥 pic.twitter.com/4kahEjKahQ— HNS | CFF (@HNS_CFF) November 15, 2018What was your favorite moment of Croatia vs Spain match from this Thursday?
