Armed thieves rob Celebrity cruise tourists

first_imgPassengers from the ocean liner Celebrity Mercury were robbed at gunpoint en route to a famed tourist spot on the Caribbean island of St Kitts on Sunday (GMT-4).16 adults and one child were passengers on board a bus on the ship-sponsored outing, ‘Essential St Kitts’, and were on the way to Brimstone Hill Fortress when the bus stopped due to a tree blocking the road, Cruise Critic reported. As the bus driver exited the vehicle to move the tree, two armed men entered the bus and robbed the tourists of their wallets, cameras and jewellery.Celebrity Cruises assured that none of the passengers were harmed physically and that all seventeen passengers have since returned to the ship where they are receiving support. While Celebrity will still dock at St Kitts, the cruise line confirmed that the excursion ‘Essential St Kitts’ has been cancelled indefinitely, “pending the outcome of an investigation”. “We will work closely with law enforcement and government officials, which are taking steps to ensure the safety of everyone in St Kitts, including visitors,” Celebrity reportedly said in a statement. Local police are investigating the matter, but said in a statement that with over 500,000 cruise passengers safely disembarking in St Kitts last year, they are “committed to root out and expose the persons responsible”.”We deeply regret any type of incident that might tarnish our visitors’ experience.” According to the news source, as a direct result of the incident, the 17 November port call for the Grand Princess has been cancelled and replaced with St John’s, Antigua.
