‘A FORCE to be reckoned with!’ – Ex-England man believes in Euro 2016 chances

first_imgAlan Smith has talked up England’s chances of European Championship glory this summer, claiming there is far more to come from Roy Hodgson’s men.The Three Lions have performed well enough at Euro 2016 thus far to convince the former Arsenal striker there is a real case for optimism, despite finishing behind Wales in Group B.Smith, who won 13 caps for England, told talkSPORT: “I’ve been really pleased with the way that they’ve played. It’s easy to forget how they’ve been over the last few tournaments. How many times have we said we can’t keep possession?”“We’ve tried to take the game to the opposition, we have dominated possession, but we just haven’t been able to finish it off.”A 0-0 stalemate against Slovakia on Monday ensured that England would finish second in their group, having won only one of their three group games. They must now face a resilient Iceland side on Monday in their last 16 clash.Yet Smith has issued a rallying cry to supporters, insisting that the best may still be yet to come.He continued: “I don’t think we should get too down, yes it is a blow to not finish top of the group and it hurts even more that Wales have finished top!“We’ve got to be positive and if we can continue playing like that and we can find that edge to our play then we are going to be a force to be reckoned with.”last_img
