Icelandic fresh foods company Bakkavör Group has snapped up speciality bread producer New Primebake and chilled manufacturer Laurens Patisseries in a major spending spree in the added-value bakery sector in the UK.Bakkavör, which last year took over fresh produce company Geest, said the acquisitions will make it the UK’s largest supplier of chilled bread products, and strengthen its position in desserts. Its purchase of Nantwich-based part-baked bread firm New Primebake, announced on April 27, is subject to the approval of the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), with a decision expected within eight weeks. The price has not been disclosed.New Primebake, which employs 340 people, had a £33.4m turnover in the year to December 31, 2005. It manufactures chilled part-baked bread products such as filled garlic baguettes, garlic slices and ciabatta, and supplies the major UK retailers.Chairman of Bakkavör Ágúst Gudmundsson said the New Primebake acquisition will expand its product portfolio and “will enable us to make full use of existing capacity, allowing us to continue to innovate to fulfil customer demand”.The acquisition follows a fire which destroyed its Geest garlic bread production site in April 2005. The bakery was one of the UK’s largest production sites for garlic bread, making 7,000 loaves a day.Meanwhile, Bakkavör said it spent £130m on Laurens Patisseries, in a deal announced on April 30. The acquisition “is a good example of our intention to continue to strengthen our market position in the fresh prepared foods markets”, Mr Gudmundsson said.Laurens Patisseries is a family business based in Newark, specialising in cream desserts. It employs around 1,200 people and supplies some 130 products, specialising in own-label.Mr Gudmundsson said the “well-managed” Laurens saw sales grow around 20% in 2005. Bakkavör said it expected further consolidation in the UK fresh prepared foods sector and said it is committed to playing an active role in this trend. What is Bakkavör?Bakkavör Group is based in Reykjavík, Iceland, and specialises in fresh prepared foods and produce. Founded in 1986, it now employs over 14,000 people in the UK, Iceland, France, Belgium, South Africa and China and has a turnover of over £1bn. The Group’s vision is to be the world’s leading fresh prepared foods and produce provider. Its key market areas are ready meals, pizzas and convenience salads.
== Tom Herbert – Hobbs House Bakery ==Herbert is a fifth-generation baker and director of Hobbs House Bakery, a multi award-winning craft bakery, based in south GloucestershireEmbracing my new vocation a contributor to British Baker, I fixed in my mind that the only appropriate way to pass a week in the Easter holidays was to pack up my grandfather’s 1981 Bedford auto sleeper for a busman’s tour of the sights and bakeries of beautiful Dorset, and track down some real bakers. We packed ’the Old Lady’ like a Dorset apple cake – full – and set off. We found she was much like a great pudding – warm, comforting, calorific – and cornering at anything above 38mph was reminiscent of cutting a soft custard slice with a blunt knife (wobbly). We made our way from Naisworth, with a pantry full of home produce, in our quest for the infamous Dorset knobs, through Bath (no time for Bath buns in this wagon), over the Salisbury plains, past the fenced-in Stonehenge, and we nestled down in the New Forest among the trees and muntjac deer.On our first day, we cycled to Beaulieu, a very well kept little town in the forest, to see what the farmers’ market had to offer. It was here I met Graham Cotton, a true craft baker, dressed for the part and enjoying selling his carefully nurtured selection of products. I was immediately impressed with the list of farms showing where the wheat had been grown, and details of the museum mill, from where all the flour had been milled. Graham was very generous with his time, explaining the virtues of dietary bread for which he has found a loyal customer base. He very kindly gave me a pre-sliced ’Wellbeing Formula Bread’ (wrapped in pairs for easy freezing). This loaf is the result of working with a local college professor of nutrition, and impressively seems to tick many of the dietary requirements customers have to contend with: reduced salt, no added sugar or fat, high in fibre and packed full of beneficial seeds, all ground down to release the goodness.Next time the sun came out, we cycled to Corfe Castle, steam trains, ramparts, lots of people with cameras and Dragon Bakery, nestled amongst it all. The very traditional bakery, with Nigel Dragon baking to the side of Joan Dragon holding the fort, yielded a surprising array of Germanic breads. Nigel said his skills were learnt on an 18-month German work placement funded by an NA scholarship, a trip that, 30 years later, was still rewarding his customers.A visit at the end of our trip, to Town Mill Bakery in Lyme (Devon) was the icing on the cake. This sumptuous new bakery, on its first rise, is a joy to behold, headed up by Aidan “undisputed king of sponge” Chapman, previously of Celtic Bakery. His philosophy is built simply on flour and water and, with its open-plan bakery/eating area, delights its customers with a tangible atmosphere of honesty and passion. The ’Old Lady’ was even slower going up-country and homeward, but the hills were alive and there is great bread returning to its rightful place at the centre of every table. National Craft Bakers’ Week (NCBW) has got off to a flying start, with cakes already sent to a number of national TV and radio stations, from bakers across the UK, in order to promote the week.Kicking off on Monday, the week celebrates the importance of the local craft baker to its community. Cakes have already been delivered to GMTV – which featured on the coffee table in front of the presenters for the entirety of the show – and ITV’s Loose Women.Cakes are also being sent to Holly and Phil at ITV’s This Morning, Radio 2 DJ Chris Evans, Christine Bleakley at BBC’s The One Show and Radio 1 DJ Chris Moyles.Local media across the country have also been informed of what craft bakers in their local regions will be doing as part of NCBW.Many bakers will be visiting local schools to carry out bakery demonstrations – for example, Bread Basket in Clacton-on-Sea will be visiting Holland Park School to teach 7-8-year-olds about bread making. Gunns Bakery, Bedfordshire, will be carrying out cake and dough demonstrations during the week, and Bushells Bakery in Lowestoft will be offering deals on its speciality bread range, promoting new dietary products and handing out tasters and ideas cards to its customers.John Gall, owner of Brownings the Bakers in Kilmarnock, Scotland, said Brownings would be supporting the week by offering children special offers on healthy options “to try to educate them on the benefits of healthy eating”.
